This artwork depicts one of the most mythical and sought-after inhabitants of the Scandinavian mountain world – the Arctic char, known in Swedish as “Rödingen,” from the upper Ransarån.

But the Arctic char is more than just a fish – it carries with it memories, landscapes, and stories. In this piece, it appears in a new context: solitary, stripped down, set against a monochrome background. Caught by my friend Glenn in the upper Ransarån, it has now taken on a new life – not as a meal, but as art. A frozen moment that holds both a personal story and a visual tribute to the living nature of the mountains.

The Arctic char is one of Sweden’s most cherished mountain fish, especially in the north, where waters like Ransarån offer ideal conditions for its survival. Thriving in cold, oxygen-rich streams, it has long held an important place in both Sámi culture and Swedish mountain heritage – valued as a source of food and as a symbol of the untouched.

Ransarån winds quietly through the northern wilderness, surrounded by low mountains, forests, and moss-covered wetlands. It may lack the fame of the great rivers, but it holds something rarer: silence, purity, and the quiet strength of simplicity.
