"Neil Tennant #01.2024" — Fine art print — 70x100 cm — Unframed — Signed edition of 75 pcs
This painting, a portrait of Neil Tennant from Pet Shop Boys, is inspired by the music video for their song "West End Girls" from 1984, directed by Andy Morahan.
"In the video, Tennant wears a sleek and sophisticated look with a black coat designed by Stephen Linard. Linard, who played a central role in the New Romantics movement and was active at London's Blitz Club, has also designed for legendary artists such as David Bowie and Boy George, as well as for pop groups like Fun Boy 3 and Spandau Ballet," says artist Marcus Larsson.
The song addresses the complexities of city life, particularly the social and economic divide in cities like London. It describes a young woman living in the city's exclusive "West End" areas, known for their abundance, while the song also reflects the sense of emptiness and disillusionment that can come with the pursuit of material success.
Neil Tennant, born July 10, 1954, in North Shields, UK, is one of the most iconic figures in pop and electronic music. Along with Chris Lowe, he formed Pet Shop Boys in the 1980s. The duo quickly became known for their innovative and trend-setting music videos, as well as hits like "West End Girls," "It's a Sin," and "Go West," and have since enjoyed a long and successful career.
