This painting is inspired by The Old Sea Bear, also known as Fiskargubben in Sweden, a painting from the late 1930s by the German marine painter Harry Haerendel (1893–1982). Haerendel painted the motif several times and sold the rights to the image in 1940 to the German publisher Kunstanstalten May, which then produced the painting in large editions. The image became very popular in Scandinavia, especially in Sweden, where it is often associated with Gothenburg and the West Coast.

Through its widespread distribution, Haerendel's Fiskargubben became an icon of Hötorgskonst, known for its mass-produced paintings sold on streets and squares, and is one of the most famous works within this genre.

The motif has long been debated, and a common belief is that it depicts the Dutch rescue boat captain Dorus Rijkers. However, Haerendel himself stated in an interview in 1982 that the man in the painting was a fisherman named Captain Meyer, who had a green boat.

This artwork is printed using pigment-based Giclée Fine Art printing on 210 gsm Hahnemühle Enhanced Fine Art Paper.
