"My idea with this painting is to visualize how a Dalahäst could be perceived through a hallucinatory experience or binocular double vision. In this interpretation, the horse appears surreal and distorted. Colors and patterns flow and change, and the horse's shapes seem to float or lose their outline, breaking into fragments that move in different directions," says the artist Marcus Larsson.

The Dalahäst originates from Dalarna, where it began being made of wood in the 1600s as a simple toy for children. The first horses were handcrafted and often unadorned. In the 1700s, artisans in Dalarna started decorating the horses with colorful patterns, often inspired by nature. In the 1800s, the distinctive Dalahäst emerged, with its bold colors and detailed paintings, becoming a well-known craft. The horse became a symbol of Dalarna and Swedish traditions, and in the 1900s, it spread internationally as a representative of Swedish culture. Today, the Dalahäst is both a popular souvenir and an artistic symbol of Swedish folk art and craftsmanship.
